Medical Transcription Theory and Practicum

Enroll in the Medical Transcription and Practicum course and learn how to prepare inpatient and outpatient reports. Students receive 16 hours of dictation with answer keys (85 percent hospital, 15 percent clinical). The course offers 20 hours of dictation as a final course of study. The WavPlayer software by Bytescribe with USB foot pedal is supplied. Students who score 90 percent or higher on their exam are eligible to join the Jumpstart internship program. This program provides real-life work experience.

Upon completion of the Medical Transcription Theory and Practicum course, students are able to:

  • Effectively transcribe medical reports
  • List the components of a history – physical and various other reports and charts
  • Identify and discuss ways of handling inaudible dictation
  • Transcribe dictation that is altered by noise, accents and poor equipment
  • Prepare notes for review and verification
  • Correct grammar where needed.
  • Use the foot pedal effectively
